For this little thought experiment, I\u2019m afraid you\u2019re going to have to imagine you\u2019re a lady with your eye on a particularly gorgeous dress. This will be harder for some of you to imagine than others.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.xpressocommunications.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Fashion_girl-with-necklace.jpg?resize=683%2C1024&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"Faschion-retail-WebClip2Go-videoproduction\" class=\"wp-image-9150\" width=\"206\" height=\"309\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Scene One: <\/strong>You walk into a shop \u2013 the dress you have been dreaming of is right in front of you. When you see it, you can see exactly what the shade of red is, and how it shimmers under the light. You can see the cut, flare and length \u2013 even without trying it on you have a good idea of the viscosity of the material and the way it will hang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, even better \u2013 were you to have any doubts, you can take it to the changing room and see how the dress fits on a \u2018real\u2019 person, how it moves and flows, how it looks perfect from the front, but\u2026 a bit like a sack of potatoes from behind. And \u2013 just when you\u2019ve fallen in love but realise that in the real world you\u2019ll have to wash this gorgeous dress, you can check the label for washing instructions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Scene Two:<\/strong> <em>Now, <\/em>you\u2019re online. There\u2019s a beautiful dress. It looks stunning on that static, tall and gorgeous model (but you just know it\u2019s pinned behind her back to fit so well, and airbrushed afterwards). You can\u2019t quite tell what shade of red it is and whether it\u2019ll match your shoes. You don\u2019t know if the material is rich silk or a much lighter knock-off. And who knows what washing machine settings it requires. You could post a question to the seller, but it\u2019ll take them ages to get back to you and the information is often vague.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At best, you simply don\u2019t buy the product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And at worst, you buy it and are immensely unsatisfied. You send it back \u2013 costing the seller return fees, and possibly resulting in a lost product (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbcearth.com\/blog\/%3Farticle%3Dyour-brand-new-returns-end-up-in-landfill\/\"><em>this <\/em>is a fantastic article<\/a> that shows how many firms simply haven\u2019t got the resources needed to sort through returns to determine quality, so everything ultimately heads to landfill: costly <em>and <\/em>bad for the environment).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You also tell your friends how rubbish the product was, and for good measure you leave a bad review on the website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now as a retailer, you can see how much damage has been done here. You\u2019ve lost money in administration, and potentially on the complete product. And to boot, you\u2019ve earned negative publicity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why has this happened?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p><em>Because all you\u2019ve done through your online platform is provided \u2018<strong>a place to buy\u2019<\/strong> rather than <strong>\u2018an opportunity to sell\u2019<\/strong><\/em>. And this is key.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Video is transformative in terms of sales. It\u2019s particularly valid in the example above \u2013 with clothes, where you can see movement and fit and nuance. But really, it applies anywhere where you might want to take just one minute to communicate the benefits of your product \u2013 but also, crucially \u2013 be realistic about its limits. A product without much of an explanation promises the world, because the consumer instantly inserts their own expectations into the situation. But there\u2019s nothing worse in sales than mismanaged expectations. Customers tend to assume, and you know what they say about assume \u2013 it makes an <em>ass<\/em> out of <em>u<\/em> and <em>me<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/www.xpressocommunications.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Retail_tshirts-small.jpg?resize=1024%2C632&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"Retail-onlineshopping-fashion-WebClip2Go\" class=\"wp-image-9151\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Video content can circumvent all of these problems.
